In the Field

Oct 19th 1916

Dear Dad and Mam

Just a line to let you know that I am as usual in the pink hope you all at home are the same. I have no news hardly to tell you. I went down town last yesterday and had a feed on the strength of it being my birthday. I am still on my seven days rest in Alex. I shall be going back on Saturday. I met two of the chaps that were in the same dug out as myself on Cape Helles. I am enclosing some photos which I think are very interesting he took them himself, please keep them safe, there are very few of this kind to be had especially the one with the sun effect. There was a very funny thing occurred in my tent yesterday. We were visited by a swarm of bees which all hung in a bunch to the tent pole I have never seen anything like this in my life before. We struck the tent then put it up again, but could not get rid of them. They are still there. There was a fine concert in the YMCA here on Tuesday night, enjoyed myself up to the mark there I shall be sorry when then seven days are up. Lew Morgan is not down here but expect he will

be able to come down before long

I hope Mam enjoyed herself on her birthday as much as possible. Never mind I hope I shall be home with you on our next birthday and for many more after that. I am going down to fetch my photos tonight and will post them on to you as soon as I get back. I fancy they will go safer. How is Mailys and Dyfan getting on hope they are alright. I wrote to you two days ago, hope you have received it. I have also written to Jon and Auntie Annie. Well I must wind up now have no more to say. Hope you are all in the best of health. With best love and best wishes to you all.

Your loving Son

Dear Dad and Mam Oct 3 1916

Just a line again to let you know that I am as usual in the pink hope you are all the same at home. I am very short of news in fact there is nothing interesting about the place I am in just now so I can’t describe that to you even if I should. The weather still keeps very hot but it does get very chilly at nights and in drill shorts I feel it pretty cold. I expect we will be getting serge again this month so we shall be roasting during the day. I am still anciously waiting for the next mail to come for me to get the photos of you. How is Nain Jones getting on I expect she is still with you hope she is enjoying herself and that she will benefit by her visit to South Wales. I was glad to hear in your last letter that she can walk much better than she use to I am thinking she is like a story I heard a short time ago. An inquisitive person asked an old man how old he was. The old man said he was a hundred. Well how do you feel said the inq pne. Well said the old man I feel a deal stronger in the commencement of this hundred than I did at the beginning of the last hundred, so it seems Nain is getting much stronger than she was. I have been hearing rumours that I would shortly be an uncle, am I or am I not let me know. I am beginning to feel my position, the importance of it and so forth. Tell Jon and Mag not to put too heavy a label on the young un because its not them that have to wear it. I expect Dyfan and Mailys will be too big for their shoes after it. I don’t know what to write am up the stick for a subject. I have not seen Mr Davies for a couple of weeks he did go to hospital with his leg but don’t know is he out yet. By the way have you received hid letter yet let me know I am ancious to know what he has to say about me. Lewis Morgan is alright and in good health. Well I must wind up now more cagged paper this is. Well roll on duration when I can talk and not have to write on paper what I have to say. I close with best love and best wishes to you all.

I am your loving Son
